What Are Chain Slings?
Chain slings are lifting tools designed for handling heavy loads, particularly in environments where other slings may fall short. Made from high-strength alloy steel, chain slings have a master oblong link connected to chains and various hook fittings. These slings are tailored for overhead lifting and rigging applications, excelling in heat-resistant and abrasive conditions. With different end fittings and multiple configurations, chain slings provide solutions for various lifting needs across industries.
Advantages of Chain Slings
Chain slings are highly regarded in the lifting industry due to their unique properties and performance. Here are some key benefits:
Strength and Longevity: Chain slings are made from Grade 100 or higher alloy steel, which offers approximately 25% more strength than Grade 80 slings. This capacity makes them a top choice for heavy-duty applications.
Handles High Temperatures:These slings maintain their strength in high-temperature conditions, and handle the environments up to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. This makes them a good choice for demanding tasks involving heat exposure.
Resistance to Cuts and Abrasions:Lifting chains are built to resist damages, abrasions, and general wear, making them perform reliably in tough working conditions where other sling types might fail.
Versatility:Known for their flexibility, chain slings can accommodate a wide range of lifting and rigging tasks, making them suitable for applications in various industries.
Safety:Each chain link tested to confirm its load capacity. Also, these slings meet strict safety standards, including ANSI, NACM, ASTM, and OSHA requirements, make sure they are safe for overhead lifting operations.

How to Select the Right Chain Sling
At Holloway, we offer a wide range of chain slings to match your specific requirements. When selecting the right chain sling, it involves considering factors such as brand, style, chain length, diameter, leg configuration, and end fittings. These features can be combined in different ways to create the various chain sling options available in our collection.
1. Choose Your Brands
Holloway Houston
Holloway Houston is a trusted brand that sells Grade 100 chain slings and offers trusted brands (Crosby, Carcano, and Yoke) chain sling components, as well as one brand that sells Grade 120 components.
Crosby
Crosby has been a leader in the lifting and rigging industry for many years, providing top-quality chain and rigging hardware, including the Crosby Eliminator hook. Their slings are made in the U.S. and assembled by our skilled team members at our warehouse. We offer a wide variety of Crosby components that are suitable for various lifting needs.
At Holloway, we carry Crosby’s range of rigging hooks and attachments, including Sling Hooks, Self Locking Hooks, Grab Hooks and more
Carcano
Another brand we feature is Carcano, a well-regarded manufacturer in the lifting industry. Their slings components are made with Grade 100 alloy steel, offering a reliable solution for heavy-duty lifting.Carcano slings components come in different features, including various sizes, lengths, and configurations. The Carcano products we carry are assembled in the U.S. to provide the highest standards in lifting equipment. We offer a variety of Carcano hook options at Holloway, including Sling Hooks, Self Locking Hooks, Grab Hooks and Foundry Hooks
Yoke
Yoke is known for its strong and high-quality sling components, made with Grade 100 alloy steel. Their products come with a unique light blue powder coating, helping them stand out while providing protection against corrosion. Yoke slings are imported and assembled in the U.S. for precision and reliability. At Holloway, we offer an array of Yoke hook products, including:
Sling Hooks, Self Locking Hooks, Grab Hooks, Foundry Hooks and more.
2. Choose Your Style
We offer two primary styles of chain slings:
Standard Chain Slings
These slings feature fixed chain lengths and are available in multiple configurations, including different leg options, chain diameters, and end fittings.
Adjustable Chain Slings
Adjustable slings come with shortener components attached to the master link, allowing the chain leg lengths to be adjusted as needed. These slings maintain their working load limits while providing greater flexibility.
Holloway offer adjustable slings and have different adjustment components:

3. Choose Your Leg Option
Chain slings are available in four leg configurations:
Single-Leg
- Ideal for vertical lifting, these versatile slings work at a 90-degree angle and are suitable for securing loads or pulling applications.
Double-Leg
- Designed to maintain balance during lifting, these slings operate at 60, 45, or 30-degree angles. The load capacity varies based on the angle of use and chain size.
Triple-Leg
- Like double-leg slings, triple-leg configurations improve load stability and operate at the same angles.
Quad-Leg
- Also known as four-leg or bridle slings, these provide the maximum number of chain lengths in one assembly, offering greater stability and capacity.
4. Choose Your Chain Length
Holloway Houston offers a range of chain lengths for both standard and adjustable slings. The length of a chain sling is determined by measuring from the load-bearing point of the master link to the load-bearing point on the opposite end when the sling is fully extended.
Standard slings come with a variety of length options, typically ranging from 3' to 20'.
Adjustable slings, on the other hand, are available in four length options: 5', 10', 15', and 20'. These slings can be adjusted to the required length by using shortening components.
5. Choose Your Chain Diameter
The diameter of the chain links determines the sling’s strength and working load limit. Our chain diameters include:
- 1/4”
- 5/16”
- 3/8”
- 1/2”
- 5/8”
Note: Not all slings are available in every diameter.
You’ll want to keep an eye out for chain wear the more you use slings. Even with proper care, chains will eventually begin to wear over time. Make sure you regularly inspect the links for minimum allowable thickness. Once it’s worn below this measurement, you should no longer use the chain.
Our table guide below will help you determine what chain wear you should look for in these chains:
Chain Slings Sizes Table
Chain Size | Material | Grade | Chain Diameter | WLL -lbs |
---|---|---|---|---|
1/4" | Alloy Steel | 100 | 0.286" | 4,300 |
5/16" | Alloy Steel | 100 | 0.332" | 5,700 |
3/8" | Alloy Steel | 100 | 0.394" | 8,800 |
1/2" | Alloy Steel | 100 | 0.529" | 15,000 |
5/8" | Alloy Steel | 100 | 0.641" | 22,600 |
6. Choose Your Hook Type
Select the appropriate hook end fittings based on your lifting requirements:
- Large throat openings with self-locking features to prevent accidental disengagement.
- Small throats designed to secure chains by gripping between links.
- Extra-large throat openings, suitable for unique lifting scenarios requiring a wider grip.
- Automatically locks under load and cannot be opened while the sling is in use, adding safety to overhead lifting operations.

Safety Guidelines for Chain Slings
To make sure your chains look good, and you are using them properly with safe and effective use, follow these safety tips:
- Always use slings within posted working load limit
- Distribute loads evenly (an unequal load on one leg can create a dangerous situation and damage the sling)
- Avoid rapid or sudden stops, impacts, and lifts
- Don’t allow a chain leg to be twisted or tied into a knot
- Don’t use slings with damaged, defective, or worn chain
- Protect sharp edges and corners accordingly with padding or protectors to keep chain from coming into contact
- Inspect hooks
- Load hooks should never be tipped or pointed
- Clean chains prior to inspection (oil and dirt can hide chain damage)
It’s always important to follow safety protocols when using these chains for lifting and rigging.
